Product detailed description

YOSHIHIRO – A manufacturer of traditional Japanese tools and equipment used for precise artisanal work. It produces both traditional and modernized carpentry tools.

Uchimaru Nomi 内丸鑿 – A "U"-shaped gouge used for carving round profiles and for other fine carving work. It is available in various radii and widths.

The blades of traditional Japanese chisels Nomi 鑿 – are made by joining two layers of steel. The chisel body is intentionally made from soft steel, which absorbs impacts when struck with a wooden mallet or a metal hammer, thus reducing the chance of damaging the tool. However, the edge is made from extremely hard carbon steel, resulting in a layer with a hardness of 62 HRC for classic Nomi chisels, up to a hardness of 67 HRC for Japanese chisels with HSS blades, while classic European chisels only reach a hardness of 58 to 60 HRC.

The steel ferrule, a metal ring at the end of the handle of Japanese chisels, needs to be precisely fitted before first use, to prevent the wooden end of the handle from splitting under the impacts of the mallet.

How to properly fit the steel ferrule?

The steel ferrule of Japanese chisels Nomi needs to be precisely fitted before first use, to prevent the wooden end of the handle from splitting under the impacts of the mallet and also to protect your hand from potentially hitting it with a hammer. All you'll need for this are a Japanese setting chisel, a steel hammer, and a solid workbench top or a larger piece of iron.
