Detailed information

Product detailed description

umebachi_ryuma_logoA special Japanese plane type Kiwa Kanna (際鉋) for planing the inner side of L-shaped corners. The blade on one side reaches to the edge. Kanna type planes have a very simple design. The blade is made of quality Japanese laminated two-layer steel and requires a hammer tap to fit into the plane body before the first use, which also sets the size of the shavings of the material removed. However, setting the blade of this specific plane is somewhat more challenging than with other planes. Not only must the blade be evenly protruded, but its edge must be aligned with the body's edge. The thickness of the shaving and the fineness of the surface result from personal blade adjustment. Ideally, the blade should protrude 0.05 to 0.2 mm from the body of the plane.

Japanese planes, like Japanese saws, are traditionally used by pulling towards oneself. One hand should guide the plane, and the other gently push the plane towards the material.

How to use the Japanese plane

japonsky_hoblik_informaceHold the Kanna with both hands - one hand holds the back part of the plane with the blade, and the other forms an L shape between the index finger and thumb, holding the part of the plane facing the user. With the movement of your body weight, pull the Kanna towards you with even and extended movements. There is no need to exert excessive force, the plane must work smoothly.

How to set the blade of the Japanese plane

japonsky_hoblik_informaceWhen fitting the blade, lightly tap the top part of the blade with a hammer. The blade should protrude approximately 0.05 to 0.2 mm. When removing the blade, lightly hit the top corners of the plane body with a hammer. If the right or left side of the blade protrudes too much, lightly tap on the same side as the protruding blade.

What to be careful of

japonsky_hoblik_informaceAlthough the Japanese plane is not a demanding tool, for the correct function of the plane keep in mind that you must plane in the direction of the wood grain and the blade must not protrude too much. Otherwise, the Japanese plane will not function well. The Japanese plane needs to be adjusted according to your own preferences before use.
