Detailed information

Product detailed description

umebachi_ryuma_logoA special Japanese plane of smaller dimensions called Sotomaru Kanna for planing curved surfaces. It has a convex body and blade shape. Kanna type planes have a very simple manufacturing process. The blade is made of high-quality Japanese laminated two-layer steel and needs to be fitted into the plane body with a hammer tap before the first use, by which you also set the size of the shaving of the material being planed. If you want to thin the shaving, just hit the body of the plane. The thickness of the shaving and the smoothness of the surface are based on personal adjustment of the cutter. Ideally, the blade should protrude 0.05 to 0.2 mm from the body of the plane.

Japanese planes, like Japanese saws, are traditionally used by pulling towards oneself. One hand should lead the plane and the other should gently push the plane towards the material.

How to Use a Japanese Plane

japonsky_hoblik_informaceHold the Kanna with both hands - one hand holds the rear part of the plane with the cutter, and the other creates an L shape between the index finger and thumb, holding the part of the plane facing the user. With the movement of your body weight, pull the Kanna towards you with even, extended movements. There is no need to exert excessive force; the plane must work smoothly.

How to Set the Blade of a Japanese Plane

japonsky_hoblik_informaceWhen setting the blade, tap lightly with a hammer on the top part of the cutter. The blade should protrude approximately 0.05 to 0.2 mm. When removing the blade, lightly tap the hammer on the upper corners of the plane body. If the right or left side of the blade protrudes too much, tap lightly on the same side as the protruding blade.

What to Watch Out For

japonsky_hoblik_informaceAlthough a Japanese plane is not a demanding tool, for proper functioning, keep in mind that you must plane in the direction of the wood grain and the blade must not protrude too much. Otherwise, the Japanese plane will not work well. The Japanese plane needs to be adjusted before use according to personal preferences.
